The French Major is designed to ensure a well-rounded preparation in language, literature, and culture. The programs are balanced and comprehensive, yet they allow students the latitude to explore subjects of special interest to them.

  • French courses:
    • Fall: 301 and 311* (or 312 or 313)
    • Spring: Two 300-level courses (e.g. 312, 315, 332, 353, 341, 342)
  • In addition, if seeking licensure:
    • Fall: Successfully complete PPST, apply for admission to Teacher Education; HEA 201
    • Spring: LLC 419 (offered every other spring)

*Required or recommended for licensure

The following courses are typically offered in the Spring:  312, 332, 341, 415.

  • French courses:
    • Fall: 315* and 353
    • Spring: 415*
  • In addition, if seeking licensure:
    • Fall: Be admitted to Teacher Education; TED 445 or TED 444 and ERM 405 (whichever one you do not take in the fall you will take in the spring, but both TED 444 and TED 445 must be taken by the end of this year)
      Spring: TED 444 or 445 and ERM 405

**”Topics in French Literature” courses may be repeated for credit under the same course number as topics change.

    • Fall: One 500-level literature course** and 532
  • In addition, if seeking licensure:
    • Fall: LLC 412***
    • Spring: LLC 465 (Student Teaching)**** (Student Teaching); also, pass the EDTPA exam, PRAXIS exam, and (May/June) apply for licensure

Sample Course Offerings

Introduction to the French language and the cultures of the French-speaking world. Emphasis on active listening, speaking, writing, and reading, and applied vocabulary.


An opportunity to increase proficiency in oral and written language skills while extending knowledge of French literature and contemporary French culture.


An introduction to contemporary French thought and cultural practices with a focus on social, cultural, political, and economic components of France.
