The German Program welcomed eight new members into UNCG’s chapter of the National German Honorary Society at its annual induction ceremony on February 28, 2017. Congratulations to Juliet Furst, Devyn Garrison, Janean Goodlow, Matthew Hellenbrand, Bethann Odell, Molly Tate, Nina Rominger, and Katelyn Welker on all your accomplishments! In addition to the official initiation of our new members the program also included a discussion on the differences between the German and U.S. higher education systems. Tyra Callaway, this year’s German Academic Exchange Service Young Ambassador, led the discussion and German exchange student Sven Stauder provided a transatlantic perspective on the topic. The discussion and ensuing Q&A session provided our students preparing to study abroad with valuable information and tips for success. The program concluded with refreshments and lively conversation among our students, their family, and German Program faculty.

Tyra Callaway and Sven Stauder on the German Higher Education System

The National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, seeks to recognize excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. The Society aims to promote the study of the German language, literature and civilization and endeavors to emphasize those aspects of German life and culture which are of universal value and which contribute to humanity’s eternal search for peace and truth. UNCG’s chapter Kappa Eta was founded in 1992 and holds yearly initiation ceremonies, usually in early December. Our members maintain the German Club, host Kaffeestunde, and engage with all things German across campus and the Greensboro community. For more information, please contact the German Program Director, Dr. Ben Davis (brdavis5@uncg.edu).
