Our beloved colleague and esteemed professor, Dr. Mark Smith-Soto, passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). With a PhD from UC Berkeley, Dr. Smith-Soto dedicated nearly four decades to the university, beginning as an instructor of Spanish in 1975 and ascending to the esteemed position of Emeritus Professor. His impact was felt profoundly, notably during his tenure as the Head of the Department of Romance Languages from 1986 to 1994.

Dr. Smith-Soto’s scholarly pursuits were extensive, spanning modern Latin American literature, poetry, literary translation, and creative writing in poetry and theater. His intellectual curiosity and passion led to the publication of numerous books, including five collections of poetry. As a committed editor, he shepherded the International Poetry Review and served as the founding director of UNCG’s Center for Creative Writing in the Arts, a role he held since 2006.
