Personal Statement

As a scholar, my investigation encompasses archival research on sociological and economic aspects of the Golden Age comedia; the study of the literary and political goals of writers and their patrons in royal and noble courts during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries in Spain; the influence of Italian opera in the re-shaping of Spanish late-baroque; and finally, how literary genres incorporate and adapt Spanish and Italian music, painting and sculpture techniques and features of the time.
As a teacher, I aim to accomplish two things: 1) to take each individual student as far as possible as a language, literature, and culture learner, and as a higher education student; 2) to share with my students more than just a body of grammar and literature, but to provide a cultural understanding of them and a way to relate with them from their own experience.
