Personal Statement
Laura Lopez was born in Spain and grew up exposed to three of the five official languages of Spain: Galician, Catalan and Spanish. She is certified in the Catalan Language (native speaker level), in the Italian language at an advanced level by the University of Turin (SAA: Università Degli Studi Di Torino), and officially certified since 2006 to teach ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) through Cambridge University, the United Kingdom. Laura also obtained the CAP certificate in Barcelona, the Spanish certificate that covers all pedagogical aspects required as an officially certified teacher.
Laura has extensive experience in teaching both native and non-native Spanish speakers. For the last 19 years, her experience as a teacher goes from teaching Spanish to native Spanish Speakers, Spanish immersion to non-native Spanish speakers and Spanish as a second language both at the school and college level. She has been working as a full time instructor at UNCG for the last 14 years, all levels from beginners to advanced students.
Laura is very proud to say that she actively participated in the process of creating the first Hispanic fraternity at UNCG, Lambda Theta Phi, focused in educational and community service matters.
Her passion is learning and teaching about Social Justice and the interactions with students in face-to-face language classes, engaging students in ways that strengthen their confidence and fluency in spoken and written Spanish.
