LLC Departmental Scholarships

The Department is in a position to award substantial scholarships to LLC majors and graduate students. We encourage promising majors to make themselves known to us by filling out a brief form (which covers all available scholarships). We rely on applications, on faculty recommendations, and on records of student achievement to ensure comprehensive coverage, and we hope to encourage able students to choose our majors.

LLC SCHOLARSHIPS (All majors)

Ruth P. Heinemann Award

This is the RPH LLC Foreign Travel Study Scholarship Fund. This Award provides financial support to study abroad.

Eligibility: LLC undergraduates and graduate students with financial need.

Preference given to:

  • Applicants studying Spanish
  • Applicants seeking K-12 Licensure or intending to teach
  • Applicants with high GPA
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or studied in foreign countries

Applicants who do not meet these criteria may also apply for the Award if funds are available.

Amount of award: $500-$2000 annually (Office of Financial Aid determines amount)

Application checklist:

  • Fill out on-line application letter including a short narrative description of your intended study abroad program. Submit letter on-line when submitting application. Include:
  • Applicants seeking K-12 Licensure or intending to teach
  • Estimated budget including other grants you may have received or applied for
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA and program of study GPA

German Studies

Anne F. Baecker Award

This is a scholarship to study abroad in German speaking countries.

Eligibility: The Anne F. Baecker Award program is competitive and not based on financial need. The eligibility criteria include:

  • American citizenship or resident alien
  • In-state or out-of-state LLC Majors or Minors pursuing the concentration in German Studies, who will not be graduating during the period of award
  • LLC Majors pursuing the concentration in German Studies, who are entering the teaching profession or going to German Studies Graduate School may be considered as well
  • Completion of German 204 or course above GER 204
  • Minimum overall GPA 2.5; minimum 3.0 GPA in German Studies-related course work

Preference will be given to:

  • Applications with higher grade point average
  • Applicants with excellent class attendance records
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or studied in German-speaking countries
  • Applicants who enroll in full-semester or full-year study abroad programs

Post-Award activities and stipulations:

  • Returning students will participate in “Global Village” activities or give at least one German class and seminar presentation about their experiences abroad

Amount of Award: $800 – $1,100 annually

Application checklist:

  • Fill out application letter adding a short narrative description of your intended study abroad program
  • Lebenslauf (200-word autobiographical sketch) written in German
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA, and GPA in German Studies-related course work

French and Francophone Studies and Spanish

The Friends of Romance Languages Scholarship

Awarded periodically to students pursuing an LLC Major that focuses on a Romance Language.

The Evelyn W. Simpson Scholarship

Awarded to graduate or undergraduate students pursuing an LLC Major that focuses on a Romance Language.

The Mary Eliza Spicer Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate students pursuing an LLC Major that focuses on a Romance Language.

The Winfield S. Barney Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to LLC majors or graduate students focusing on French and Francophone Studies and/or Spanish.

Application checklist:

  • Minimum overall GPA 3.0; minimum 3.5 GPA in course work related to Spanish or French and Francophone Studies
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA and program of study GPA
  • Print and fill out application

French and Francophone Studies

The Meta Miller – Elizabeth Barineau Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of superior course work to rising junior or senior LLC majors with a concentration in French and Francophone Studies, and incoming or continuing graduate students in French and Francophone Studies. Freshman or sophomore majors who have excelled in French 204 may also be considered. May also be awarded to graduate or undergraduate majors in Spanish on the basis of academic achievement.

The René Hardré Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to LLC majors or graduate students focusing on French and Francophone Studies.

The Jean-Paul Koenig – Kathleen Koestler Scholarship for Study Abroad

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to LLC/French and Francophone Studies majors for study abroad in France.

Application checklist:

  • Minimum overall GPA 3.0; minimum 3.5 GPA in course work related to French and Francophone Studies
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA and program of study GPA
  • Print and fill out application

Spanish

The Augustine LaRochelle Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Spanish.

The McFayden Scholarship

Awarded to students majoring in Spanish based on achievement and need. May also be awarded to other undergraduates majoring in LLC.

The Ramiro Lagos Scholarship for Study Abroad

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to Spanish majors for study abroad in Spain.

LLC Awards

The Outstanding Major Award

Every year the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures presents the Outstanding Major Award for overall performance and achievement to students pursuing LLC majors in Applied Languages: French K-12 Teaching Licensure, Applied Languages: Spanish K-12 Teaching Licensure, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Global Languages and Communities, and Spanish.

The LLC Community Engagement Award

This award is given to a graduating LLC major with an outstanding record of service to the community.


 2019-20 College of Arts & Sciences Scholarships

The deadline for applications is March 29, 2019. The application and faculty recommendation form are included below. Additionally, these documents are accessible on the College of Arts & Sciences website, under the ‘For Students’ tab. Students will be considered for all of the Arts & Sciences scholarships that they are eligible for by submitting this single application.
